jump to navigation | content ferry house self catering accomodation at glenelg on the west coast of scotland ferry house comments accommodation map ferry otters walks and mountains gallery links stop press: our sea eagle is on bbc television! © bbc amazing footage of our local sea eagle stealing mackerel from a gull. filmed in the kylerhea narrows just below ferryhouse for the the bbc programme, hebrides — islands on the edge. . see the clip on the bbc website . ferry house is set on a rocky promontory within a few yards of the sea, and is positioned where the isle of skye is closest to the mainland. originally an inn, the house faces south, and commands a wonderful view down the sound of sleat to sandaig and knoydart, and over the sea to skye. its location is where the cattle used to be driven, to swim across the sea on the long journey to the southern markets; and dr johnson and mr boswell stayed here on their famous tour of the highlands in 1773. there is no other house within a mile. nearby is a long sand beach; beyond, on the outskirts of glenelg village, is the impressive shell of general wade's 18th century barracks. in the village itself, (1.5 miles) there is a well-stocked shop, and an inn which serves excellent food. a few minutes' drive beyond are the famous pictish brochs and four miles further down the coast is gavin maxwell's "camusfearna". a six-car ferry leaves from a slipway 300 yards from the house. this is a marvellous place for walking, climbing, touring, painting and watching wildlife. the annex is on two floors. a porch leads into a large sitting-room with an open fire, sofas, dining area, television, video and dvd, a stocked bookcase and a piano. to the rear of this room is a small breakfast room leading onto a newly fitted kitchen with double sink, microwave, electric cooker with hob, dishwasher, washing-machine and tumble drier, fridge-freezer, and all cooking utensils. both these rooms look out onto the back garden. also leading out of the sitting-room, there is a double bedroom with en-suite shower and wc. at the other end of the sitting-room, there is a steepish stair to a large upstairs bedroom. this room has a double bed and one single bed, and also space for a cot. there is a velux window to the rear and a skylight to the front. this room has a spacious en-suite shower room with basin, wc, bidet and heated towel rail and velux window to the rear. good quality cotton linen and towels are provided. well behaved dogs are welcome in the main living area. we now charge £20 to cover the cost of steam cleaning. 2014 prices vary from 265 to 525 uk pounds per week depending on season. contact us for off-season prices and christmas/new year rates. there is a deposit of £100 payable at the time of booking, and the remainder paid two weeks before you arrive. coal and electricity at cost price. accommodation is ideally for 4 people, although the upstairs bedroom could be a family room. please advise us of your proposed party number. shorter stays/flexible dates are sometimes available at quieter times of year. looking down the sound of sleat double rainbow at ratagan coral beach at "camusfearna" from ratagan pass, just off the road to glenelg, looking across to morvich, and the hills sgurr an airgid and a'ghlas bheinn for more information about ferry house, please write to: james watt, ferry house, glenelg, iv40 8jz, telephone 01599 522 253 or email: [email protected]
